Independent travel guides for places the internet hasn't ruined yet

Atlas & Awe covers European destinations that still reward the traveller who turns up — not the tourist who books what's trending.

The honest version

Atlas & Awe is an independent travel blog focused on one specific type of trip: the European destination that offers something genuinely exceptional — coastline, food, history, or all three — at a price point that hasn't yet caught up with its quality. The Albanian Riviera. The North Macedonian lake districts. The parts of Portugal that aren't Lisbon. The Greek islands that don't have an Instagram filter named after them.

Every article on this site is based on direct experience. We don't publish listicles compiled from other people's listicles, and we don't write about places we haven't been. If a claim appears in an Atlas & Awe article — a price, a travel time, a recommendation — it's because we verified it ourselves.

The blog is written by a single author: an independent European travel writer who has spent four years travelling and working across 30+ countries, with a particular focus on the western Balkans, the Ionian coast, and the less-visited corners of southern Europe.

How we work

Direct experience
We go first
Every destination we write about is somewhere we have been. Prices, travel times, restaurant recommendations, and logistical details are verified on the ground, not sourced from other travel sites.
No sponsored content
We pay our own way
We do not accept payment for positive coverage, free hotel stays in exchange for reviews, or sponsored travel. Our income comes from affiliate commissions and display advertising — never from the companies we write about.
Honest recommendations
We say what didn't work
Travel writing that only covers the positives is marketing, not journalism. If a restaurant was overrated, a ferry was chaotic, or a beach was less impressive than advertised, we write that.
Transparent affiliates
Disclosure on every article
Articles containing affiliate links are clearly marked. We only link to products and services we have used or would use ourselves. Affiliate commission never influences our editorial recommendations.

How this site makes money

Atlas & Awe is funded by two income streams, both disclosed fully:

Neither income stream influences what we write, which destinations we cover, or which products we recommend. Full details are in our Affiliate Disclosure.

Atlas & Awe is an independent publication. Editorial decisions are made without input from advertisers or affiliate partners.
